IF HE HAD NOT COME

A Christmas card was published several years ago that depicted a minister taking a nap in his study on Christmas morning. As he slept, he dreamed of what the world would have been like if Christ had not come. No Christmas bells pealed out the familiar carols; no happy voices sang, "Joy to the world! The Lord is come!" In his dream, the pastor walked down the street, but no church stood on the corner. When he returned to his study, he found no book about the Savior on the shelves. As he stood there puzzled, the doorbell rang. It was a small boy, asking him to visit his dying mother. Without any hesitation he hurried to the boy's home, sat down by the bed, and opened his Bible to read words of hope and comfort in John 3:16 and John 14, but they weren't there; his Bible ended with Malachi. There was no New Testament message of salvation, no word of glorious resurrection, no promise of heaven. The pastor wept bitterly. Christ had not come! Just then the minister was awakened by the voices of the church choir singing, "O come all ye faithful, joyful and triumphant; Come ye, O come ye to Bethlehem; Come and behold Him, born the King of angels; O come, let us adore Him, Christ, the Lord." With a new appreciation for Christmas, he rejoiced to hear that message! With joyful hearts today, we thank God that "when the fullness of the time had come," He sent forth His Son, born of a woman to redeem us (Galatians 4: 4). Praise God! Jesus really did come. My prayers are with you to have a blessed Christmas day and a bountiful New Year as we await the joy of our Heavenly Hope.
