When my wife was pregnant with our son, about six months along, we were called into the doctor's office. It was explained to us that the ultrasound had discovered a bubble in the digestive tract of the fetus. We were also told that our child had an increased risk of Down's Syndrome and the digestive problem would most likely require surgery immediately after birth. Those were hard things to hear, but we took it to our church and prayer partners. For weeks we prayed for ourselves, that we would be that kind of special set of parents with the extra love that successful parents of Downs babies have. Then, I was struck by the selfishness of such prayers. We had concentrated on us and God showed me in the Bible that day the healing of the centurion's servant. With faith, I prayed, "God, I am not worthy to ask anything of you, but I know that with a word you can heal my son in the womb." The months that followed were filled with trust. We didn't submit to any more tests. In November 1995, Collin was born without Down's and without any digestive problems whatsoever. We were so filled with joy at his birth that it was nearly an hour before we remembered to ask the doctor about any additional procedure's Collin would need. "He's fine. He's perfect," the doctor said. Collin is indeed a gift from God and a daily reminder of God's power and mercy.
